A Denver family heating company since 1988
Nils Halvorsen came to Denver from Duluth, Minnesota in 1979 to hang ductwork in new subdivisions. He started the company in his Harvey Park garage in 1988. His daughter Kari runs it today.

Our story
Nils Halvorsen grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, and came to Denver in 1979 to hang ductwork in the new subdivisions going up in Aurora and Littleton.
In 1988 he started Halvorsen Heating & Air in his garage in Harvey Park, with one van and a phone that rang in the kitchen at night. In 1996 the company moved to its shop on South Santa Fe Drive.
His daughter Kari started as an install helper in 1998. She ran the service department for ten years and took over the company when Nils retired in 2014.
Today we're 21 people and 12 vans, counting technicians, installers and the dispatchers who answer the phone at 3 am. Nils still drops by on Fridays.

The people who come to your house

Kari Halvorsen
Owner
Started as an install helper for her father in 1998, ran the service department for ten years and took over the company in 2014. On cold-snap nights she still answers the phone.

Marcus Greene
Senior technician, east side
Aurora, east Denver, Centennial east of I‑25, Parker
With us since 2004. He trains every new technician and takes most of our heat pump calls. Ask him why your heat pump steams in January.
-

Mateo Ruiz
Technician, west side
Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, Golden, west and central Denver
Joined in 2016 after trade school in Denver. He knows the 1950s basements of Lakewood and Wheat Ridge by heart, and he checks the altitude setup on every furnace he opens.
-

Dana Whitfield
Technician, north side
Arvada, Westminster, Thornton, Broomfield, Commerce City
Fourteen years in the trade, nine with us. She's our swamp cooler specialist, and the one we send when the furnace is in a tight attic.
-

Priya Raman
Technician, south side
Littleton, Englewood, Centennial, Highlands Ranch, south Denver
Joined in 2021. She runs our hail-season condenser checks and most of our ductless mini-split installs.
How we work
- Paid by the hour
- Our technicians earn the same whether you buy a $145 repair or a $20,000 system. Nobody here earns a commission on sales.
- Prices in writing first
- Every repair comes from one flat-rate book, and you approve the price before the work starts.
- Honest about repairs
- If a repair isn't worth it, we say so. If a replacement isn't needed yet, we say that too.
- The same people
- Each zone has its technician, so you'll usually see the same face from one visit to the next.
Licenses, insurance and the rules we follow
- Refrigerant certification
Every Halvorsen technician holds EPA Section 608 certification. Federal rules require it for technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release ozone-depleting refrigerants.
- Older R‑22 systems
Production and import of R‑22 refrigerant ended in the United States on January 1, 2020. You can keep using an existing R‑22 system, but repairs that need refrigerant rely on recycled supply and cost more.

- Permits
We pull the permit wherever your city or county requires one for a replacement, and we schedule the inspection.
- Insurance
General liability insurance of $2 million per occurrence and workers' compensation for every employee. Certificate of insurance sent before the job, on request.
- Background checks
Every technician and installer passes a background check before their first day.
Paying us
Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, check, ACH bank transfer or cash.
Repairs are paid when the work is done. For replacements, there's no deposit until the equipment is delivered, and the balance is due after the final walk-through.
Financing for new systems with approved credit through a third-party lender.

Mateo found that our old furnace had never been set up for the altitude. That explained the soot on the vent. The new one runs clean and quiet, and the invoice matched the estimate to the dollar.

Good work on our swamp cooler, but our first appointment got pushed back a day during the August heat wave. Dana called the night before to tell us, which I appreciated.

After the June hail, Priya combed out the fins on our AC and showed us the coil was fine. Another company had already quoted us a new unit.

Not the cheapest quote we got, and the install date was two weeks out. But the permit was pulled, the inspection passed on the first try and the warranty is registered in my name.

Marcus spent an hour walking us through a heat pump versus a new furnace and never pushed either one. We went with dual fuel. The final invoice matched the quote.

Our 1952 house has a tiny furnace closet. They found a furnace that fits, and the closet door still closes. Clean install, no dust anywhere.

Furnace quit at 11 pm on the coldest night of the year. A person answered, Dana called back in ten minutes and the heat was back on before 1 am. She showed me the cracked igniter before replacing it.

Kari came out herself to look at the boiler in our 1925 house. They bled every radiator, and the back bedroom is finally warm.

The plan pays for itself for us. They came in October, cleaned the flame sensor, and we skipped the usual first-cold-night breakdown.

Talk to us before the first cold night
A tune-up in the fall catches most of the breakdowns we see in January. Plans start at $12 a month.
